The constructions became necessary when I discovered that I wanted to add the third dimension in my paintings. I wanted to “shape” the canvas, but couldn’t figure out how to accomplish what I was looking for. So I began cutting into the surface of the canvas and “weaving” strips of canvas in and out of the image.
First I paint the strips of canvas as well as the painting itself. Then I weave the strips in a predetermined way. I like the way this adds real depth to the illusion of depth.
Frequently I incorporate other types of materials in my constructions. Various kinds of eyelets and grommets, wooden pieces and even electronic components have found their way into them.
